Who Is Eligible for Autism Housing

  • NDIS Participant

You must have an active NDIS plan. Autism housing through SDA is funded by the NDIS, so participation is the essential first step.

  • Autism Diagnosis

A formal diagnosis from a psychologist, psychiatrist, or paediatrician is required. This clinical evidence forms the foundation of your SDA application.

  • High Support Needs

Your autism must significantly impact daily life. The NDIA needs evidence that specialist housing features are essential for your safety and independence.

  • Housing-Related Need

You must demonstrate that mainstream housing cannot meet your needs. Sensory sensitivities, safety risks, or routine disruptions that require specialist design qualify.

How to Apply for Autism Housing

Follow these steps to apply for autism housing in Sydney through the NDIS SDA program.

01

Get an OT Assessment

Request an occupational therapy assessment documenting how autism impacts your daily functioning. Your OT will identify specific housing features needed for independence and safety.

02

Gather Evidence

Collect reports from your psychologist, psychiatrist, or specialist documenting your autism diagnosis and support needs. Include any behaviour support plans or sensory assessments.

03

Request SDA Funding

Work with your support coordinator to submit an SDA funding request to the NDIA. Your application should clearly link autism-related needs to specialist housing features.

04

NDIA Reviews Application

The NDIA assesses your application against SDA eligibility criteria. They review your OT reports, medical evidence, and how autism-related needs link to specialist housing features.

05

Receive NDIA Decision

You will receive a decision on your SDA funding request. If approved, your NDIS plan will include SDA funding for a specific design category like Improved Liveability or Robust.

Moving into an Edenbridge Living home is a life-changing experience for my brother, who has an intellectual disability. The 1-bedroom villa gives him the independence he craved but still with support available and friends living next door. The Edenbridge team's dedication to their residents' comfort is evident in every detail of their homes.

Autism Housing Sydney: FAQs

Yes. Autistic adults with high support needs often qualify for autism housing Sydney under the Improved Liveability or Robust SDA categories. You need evidence of how autism impacts daily functioning and why specialist housing features are necessary.

Our Sydney properties feature adjustable lighting, sound insulation, calming colours, secure outdoor areas, and sensory retreat spaces. Specific features vary by property and design category.

Both options are available. Some autistic adults prefer solo living for sensory control, while others thrive with compatible housemates. We help match residents based on compatibility and preferences.

Sydney has extensive autism support networks. We connect residents with autism-specialist SIL providers, allied health professionals, and community programs across all Sydney regions.

Start with an OT assessment documenting your autism-related housing needs. Your support coordinator can request SDA funding for autism housing. Once approved, contact Edenbridge to explore autism-friendly Sydney properties.
